Since writing the post below I have come across this helpful article. There are two particularly useful quotes in it (the first is originally from one of DiPuccio's articles mentioned below):—
It is not a question of whether Scripture or tradition has the primacy; nor is it even a question of Scripture and tradition; rather, it is more properly a question of scriptural tradition.
Tradition is the living faith of the dead. Traditionalism is the dead faith of the living.
